A certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) cannot provide an official medical diagnosis of lipedema, but they can expertly identify and screen for the condition.

What is the role of a CLT in diagnosing lipedema?

Screening and identification. A CLT often recognizes the characteristic signs of lipedema, such as symmetrical fat accumulation, tenderness, easy bruising, and feet that are spared from swelling.

An “official” diagnosis. Because CLTs are typically physical therapists, occupational therapists, or nurses with specialized lymphatic training, formal medical diagnoses must be confirmed by a licensed physician, surgeon, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

Referral network. CLTs frequently spot undiagnosed lipedema and will refer patients to a supportive physician or specialist to secure the official documentation needed for medical management and insurance coverage.
