Aftercare for Reflexology
In order to receive the full benefits after a reflexology session:
♦ Drink plenty of water. Hydrate after the session and on the following day, as this will help the liver and kidneys flush out toxins and improve energy levels.
♦ Try to rest. Try to rest after the session for the remainder of the day, as this will help the therapy work to its full potential and will allow the body to begin the balancing/healing process.
♦ Avoid tea, coffee, and alcohol. Avoid caffeine and alcohol after the session and on the following day, as these are stimulants and will reduce the therapy’s effectiveness.
♦ Eat a light and healthy meal. Allow the body to put its energy into healing.
What are possible side effects of reflexology?
There are some typical side effects which some individuals may develop after reflexology include lightheadedness, fatigue, increased thirst and elimination, emotional sensitivity, foot tenderness, and/or temporary flu-like symptoms.
Certain areas of the feet may feel more sensitive than others during a reflexology session. The tenderness often decreases as you begin to relax. Reflexology should never be painful, so never hesitate to speak up if you feel discomfort so your sessions can be adjusted.
How often should you have reflexology sessions?
Like other complementary and alternative therapies, the health effects of reflexology are cumulative. The more consistent your therapy, the more your body will respond. Weekly sessions for 3-4 weeks, followed by biweekly sessions for another 3-4 sessions, typically provide the most noticeable benefits, depending on your specific health concerns. Many health issues may be mitigated with therapeutic maintenance every 4-6 weeks.
