Nitric oxide is a colorless gas naturally produced by the body that widens blood vessels to regulate blood flow, controls inflammation, and supports overall cardiovascular health.


Nitric Oxide Versus Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (often confused with nitric oxide) is a general anesthetic and pain reliever, whereas nitric oxide (NO) is the signaling molecule researched for targeted anti-inflammatory and tissue-healing therapies.

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is also known as “laughing gas” and is used for procedural sedation and dental anesthesia. Ongoing clinical trials study it for severe nerve pain conditions like complex regional pain syndrome, but it is not a standard anti-inflammatory treatment.

NO is administered as an inhaled gas directly into the lungs using specialized, precisely calibrated delivery systems connected to mechanical ventilators, nasal cannulas, or breathing masks in a hospital setting. It can be injected directly into the inspiratory limb of a ventilator circuit for infants or adults via an endotracheal tube or delivered via specialized high-flow nasal cannula systems or non-rebreathing masks for spontaneously breathing patients.

Eat nitrate-rich foods. Consume vegetables like beetroot, spinach, cabbage, garlic, and citrus fruits.

Exercise regularly. Physical activity stimulates the endothelium to produce more nitric oxide.

Support precursors. Supplements like L-arginine and L-citrulline provide the building blocks your body uses to synthesize nitric oxide.
