Vibration therapy has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential health benefits and applications in various therapeutic settings. It is non-invasive and utilizes mechanical vibrations to stimulate muscles and soft tissues. The therapy operates under the principle of mechanotransduction, where cells convert physical forces, such as pressure, stretch, or stiffness, into biochemical and electrical signals.

The primary goals of vibration are to improve quality of life through reduction of both short-term and chronic pain and reducing the odds of future injuries. Vibration therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatment methods, including physical activity.

Mechanical vibration therapy itself dates back to the 19th century for general physical conditioning and circulation. During this era, physicians moved away from accidental vibratory observations (like bumpy carriage rides) and began building dedicated machines to enhance physical conditioning, treat neurological disorders, and boost systemic circulation.


Types of Vibration Therapy

There are two primary types of vibration therapy:

Whole-body vibration (WBV). In WBV, a person stands, sits, or lies on a vibrating platform, transmitting vibrations throughout the entire body. Effects of whole body vibration are naturally felt throughout the body, making whole-body vibration exercises ideal for widespread pain relief.

Localized vibration therapy (LVT). LVT focuses on specific body parts, often through the use of handheld devices like a G5 massager.


Gyratory Versus Percussion Therapy

Motion and action. While percussion uses a linear, high-impact, repetitive punching or tapping motion (comparable to a jackhammer), gyratory vibration uses multidirectional, oscillating, or circular stroking patterns that transfer rapid wave energy across the surface.

Amplitude. While percussion devices feature a large stroke amplitude designed to drive the head forcefully into tissue, gyratory vibration devices operate with a much smaller amplitude (often 3 to 5 millimeters) to maximize frequency transfer.

Tissue penetration and sensation. Percussion delivers localized impact good for targeting specific deep knots or trigger points, though it can feel aggressive or uncomfortable. Gyratory vibration spreads energy more broadly across muscles, origins, and insertions to promote relaxation and circulation with less impact force.

Combined technologies. Systems like G5 combine both modalities into a gyratory percussion or oscillatory action, blending directional stroking and pulsation to deliver therapeutic comfort.


The Cellulite Discovery

The G5 massage machine was not originally invented to treat cellulite. Instead, it was discovered as an effective cellulite treatment through clinical adaptation after being developed for medical physical therapy and respiratory care.

Gyratory vibration is an airway clearance technology used in respiratory therapy to clear thick mucus from the lungs. Unlike straight-line percussion found in consumer devices, gyratory devices use a patented, circular “directional stroking” motion — an oscillating pattern that penetrates deeper into tissue. This technology was developed to mimic the natural motion of a skilled physical therapist’s hands during manual chest percussion.

As physical therapists used the G5 machine on patients’ thighs, hips, and lower backs to treat sports injuries or structural muscle pain, they noticed a recurring “side effect” — the skin overlying the treated muscle tissue became visibly smoother, tighter, and significantly less dimpled. Aesthetic professionals and dermatologists realized that the precise mechanical forces designed to heal deep muscle tissue directly counteracted the anatomical causes of cellulite.


The Science Behind It

Analysis later explained exactly why the G5 device was so uniquely suited to reverse the appearance of cellulite:

Breaking fibrous septae. Cellulite is caused when tough, fibrous bands of connective tissue pull downward on the skin while fat deposits push upward, creating an orange-peel dimple. The deep percussive force of the G5 machine loosens these rigid, myofascial adhesions, releasing the downward pull.

Draining trapped fluid. Cellulite areas usually suffer from poor microvascular circulation and stagnant lymphatic drainage, which causes localized fluid retention and swelling. The G5’s rapid gyratory movements mechanically push trapped fluid and toxins into the lymphatic system to be flushed out.

Stimulating collagen. The vigorous mechanical vibrations trigger a localized healing response, forcing the body to produce fresh collagen and elastin, which thickens and tightens the skin over the fat deposits.


Treatment with G5

G5 massage is a mechanical treatment that goes much deeper than the therapist can. Different heads are used to mimic different massage techniques. G5 is excellent for toning, increasing circulation and to aid in the breakdown of fatty deposits and cellulite.

What are contraindications to G5 treatment?

There are two types of contraindications — total, when massage should not be performed at all, and local, when massage can be performed but not over the contraindicated areas. With precautions, therapy can only be performed with your medical practitioner’s permission.

Total contraindications. This type of therapy cannot be performed on those clients with the following conditions: acute infections (including colds, cellulitis, or viral/bacterial illnesses), active cancer or tumors, angina, bleeding disorders or prescribed blood thinners, congestive heart failure, deep venous thrombosis, fever, fractures, heart conditions, infectious skin conditions, liver failure, neuritis, osteoporosis, pacemakers, phlebitis, pregnancy, recent heart attack, recent surgery or acute injuries, renal failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, under the influence of drugs or alcohol (including prescription pain medication), undiagnosed pain

Local contraindications. Therapy can be performed but not over the areas affected by: abrasions, arthritis, bruising, burns, localized skin infections (such as ringworm or impetigo), open wounds (including cuts or sores), sunburn, undiagnosed lumps, varicose veins

Medical contraindications. Therapy can be performed after it has been approved in writing by your physician: asthma, chronic inflammation, diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure, psoriasis or eczema, swelling, thyroid dysfunction

What are side effects of G5 massage?

Temporary redness, temporary brown darkness and bruising can be seen in the area where G5 is applied due to increased blood circulation. These complications vary according to the skin type and last within 5-10 days.



Vertical vibration alone is often not enough to feel the full effects of whole-body vibration training. G5 vibration devices incorporate unique gyratory percussion technology, combining percussive and oscillating motions to deliver multidirectional and directional stroking patterns. This technology closely mimics advanced manual techniques, offering targeted and efficient vibration therapy.
