Class 1 Mild Compression
15-21 mmHg compression stockings can help with mild symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) by improving circulation, reducing swelling, and easing discomfort like tired or aching legs. They are best for mild conditions, while more severe CVI may require higher compression levels, and it’s crucial to ensure you don’t have arterial disease before using them.
Class 1 stockings help to:
Improve circulation. The graduated compression applies more pressure at the ankle and tapers up the leg, helping blood flow from the feet back to the heart.
Reduce swelling. This pressure helps decrease minor swelling in the feet, ankles, and legs.
Alleviate discomfort. They can relieve common CVI symptoms like tired, aching legs and general discomfort.
Provide preventative support. For individuals with a family history of venous disease or very early symptoms, this level can offer preventive support.
Important considerations for Class 1 stocking:
Mild symptoms. This compression level is generally effective for mild CVI symptoms, such as minor swelling and discomfort. For more moderate to severe CVI, such as pronounced varicose veins or skin changes, your doctor may recommend higher compression levels like 20-30 mmHg or 30-40 mmHg.
Arterial health. It is critical to have your arterial health checked before using compression stockings. If your ankle-brachial index is below 0.6, avoid compression therapy due to the risk of worsening arterial compromise.
Professional guidance. Always consult a healthcare professional to determine the right compression level and product for your specific condition.
