Lymphatic Intention Versus Standard Deep Tissue Intention

The intention of the practitioner dictates how the device is configured. If used incorrectly, percussion can actually hinder lymphatic flow.

Targeted Lymphatic Intention

Deep Tissue/Sports Intention

Applied Pressure

Light to moderate. Needs to avoid collapsing delicate superficial lymph vessels.

Deep and heavy. Designed to penetrate deep into thick muscle bellies.

Direction of Motion

Strictly centripetal. Must always move in the direction of natural lymph flow, towards the terminus (at the collarbone) or to the nearest lymph nodes.

Varies. May move back and forth along a muscle fiber or across the muscle grain.

Primary Goal

Decongest fluid, reduce swelling, and flush out metabolic waste.

Relieve trigger points, break up deep scar tissue, and relax hypertonic muscles.

Device Speed or Frequency

Lower, gentle settings to prioritize fluid movement.

Higher speeds to override pain receptors and release deep tension.

Medical Considerations and Contraindications

While beneficial for general fluid retention, mild postoperative swelling, or recovery, massage guns should be approached with caution.

If you are treating clinical lymphedema (e.g., after cancer treatment or lymph node removal), aggressive percussion can cause micro-trauma to an already compromised system, potentially worsening the condition. For true lymphedema, mechanical devices are usually paired strictly with manual lymphatic drainage and multi-layer compression bandaging under medical supervision.

What are absolute contraindications?

Never use a massage gun or any other type of device (such as cupping, gua sha, etc.) with the following:

Acute deep venous thrombosis or blood clots (percussion can dislodge a clot).
Active localized skin infections or open wounds.
Active tumors or malignancies in the treatment area.
